In the match, he defeated Vladimir Kramnik (rapid chess) 4-2 in 2007, Magnus Carlsen 3-3 (win after tiebreak), Alexy Shirov 3½-2½. Lost after (tiebreak) 4-5 to Alexander Grischuk at the Candidates in 2011 and drew with Vladimir Kramnik 3-3 in 2012.

A member of the national team since 1996 and the undisputed leader of the teams which won the 2006, 2008 and 2012  Olympiads and the 2011 World team Championship.

Peak rating: 2830 in 2014, he was then the 3rd  best world rated player.
